Of Cherries and Eggs

It has been awhile since I've given a report on my "30 before 30" list. Since late February, I have crossed two more items off my list: see the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., and boil an egg correctly.

Originally, I wanted to go to the actual Cherry Blossom Festival, but I had already made plans to go out of town the weekend of the festival. It turns out, we were lucky to go when we did to see the blossoms, because thanks to an early, warm spring and some windy weather, the blossoms were all but gone during the festival and parade in mid-April. That's the unfortunate thing about East Coast weather (and D.C. weather in particular) -- it's entirely unpredictable from year to year.

Trying to ignore the crowds, tourists, and chain smokers, I managed to catch several beautiful glimpses of the delicate pink flowers overlooking the scenic Tidal Basin. I also had the chance to visit the Jefferson Memorial, which I have never seen. It was a perfect spring day, and a great way to start the season!

And now, on an entirely different topic, I finally managed to boil an egg correctly. See, one of my favorite food groups is deviled eggs, but I've struggled for years to actual boil the eggs myself. I either overcook them or under cook them every time, and I've gathered advice from lots of people over the years (mom, stepmom, friends, roommates), but to no avail. Finally, a couple of weekends ago, I picked up one of my cookbooks, a "cooking basics" guidebook with some decent tips, how-tos, and even recipes. Painstakingly, I followed the advice on how to boil an egg -- perfection! Let's just hope I haven't created a monster, because I truly do love a good deviled egg...
